What Is The NFC East In Football? Definition & Meaning On SportsLingoWhat Is The NFC East In Football?

1. In the National Football League (NFL), the NFC East is one of four divisions that comprise the National Football Conference (NFC). It is one of eight total divisions in the NFL. The NFC West includes teams from Texas, New York, Pennsylvania and Washington D.C.

History of the NFC East

The NFC East was originally known as the Capitol Division of the NFL’s Eastern Conference. In its inaugural season of 1967, it included the Washington Redskins, Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and New Orleans Saints. The New Orleans Saints were an expansion team that season. In 1968, the New York Giants played one season in the division before being moved back out of the Capitol Division.

The NFC East contains some of the most successful franchises in the history of the NFL. The most prominent of these is the Dallas Cowboys, who have been nicknamed “America’s Team” since the 1970s. As of 2022, teams in the NFC East have appeared in the Super Bowl 21 times and have won it 13 times, which is the most of any of the NFL’s current eight divisions.

The Dallas Cowboys have won the NFC East division title the most, having won 23 times. The Cowboys are also tied for the highest winning percentage in NFL history (.569).

Being located in some of the largest media markets in the United States, the NFC East also contains some of the most valuable franchises in the NFL. In addition, it is home to some of the NFL’s most intense rivalries.

Previous Teams In The NFC East

For the vast majority of the NFC East’s history, it has contained the same four teams. One of the only exceptions is when the New Orleans Saints were part of the division in 1967 and 1969. Also, the Arizona Cardinals franchise was part of the division from 1970 (following the AFL/NFL merger) until the divisional realignment of 2002.

Current Teams In The NFC East

As of 2022, the NFC East currently contains the following four teams, all of which have been part of the division since the 1970 merger between the AFL and NFL:

  • Washington Football Team
  • Dallas Cowboys
  • Philadelphia Eagles
  • New York Giants
