What Is The Definition Of Gronking In Football? What Is Gronking In Football? Definition & Meaning On SportsLingo

Gronking is a term that originated in American football, and it refers to the act of celebrating a touchdown by imitating the signature touchdown celebration of former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski. This celebration involves spiking the ball with extreme force, making a loud noise, and acting very excitedly.

How Did The Term Gronking Originate?

It’s hard to believe the Gronk Spike almost didn’t seem like a widely-anticipated celebration that would have staying power. The first attempt of a Gronk Spike happened during a regular season game in September 2010, during Gronkowski’s rookie season. It occurred after a five-yard touchdown pass that helped New England surge to a lead over the rival Buffalo Bills. Once the touchdown catch was secured, Gronk hoisted up his left knee, hopped on his right leg, hurled the ball over his head, and whipped it into the turf.

During a game after Christmas, the Gronk Spike made a return. It was noticed by a local paper, the Telegram & Gazette that recalled in print: “Gronkowski raised his arms in celebration before violently spiking the ball into the frozen artificial surface.”

What Is A Famous Example Of Gronking?

The most famous example of Gronking is likely the one that took place during the AFC Championship game in 2012, when Rob Gronkowski scored a touchdown and celebrated by jumping onto a table and dancing, much to the delight of the crowd. This celebration became known as the “Gronk Spike” and has since been imitated by many other football players.
