What Is The Definition Of Cut Blocking In Football?
This is a blocking technique in football used by the offense line that involves hitting a defensive player in the knees in order to knock him down. Also known as “chop blocking”, this is a legal play as long as the defensive player knocked down was not already been engaged with another member of the offensive line. However, cut blocking is often considered a dirty play due to the potential risk of injury to the defensive player. If the defensive player is already engaged with an offensive lineman and someone cut blocks the defender, that block is then considered illegal.
Although this technique is most often used by offensive lineman, the cut blocking technique may also be used by running back, tight ends, fullbacks or other players who are asked to block defensive players.
The cut block was first introduced by Bobb McKittrick, who introduced it to his offensive line schemes in San Francisco from 1979 to 1999.
