What Is The Definition Of Completion In Football?
In American football, a completion occurs when an eligible receiver, such as a wide receiver, tight end, or running back, catches a pass. Completion is one of three possible outcomes for a forward pass, the others being an incomplete pass (one that’s dropped by a receiver or falls to the ground) or a pass that is intercepted by the defense.
What Happens After An Eligible Receiver Makes A Completion?
After completion of a forward pass, a receiver can advance the football forward in an attempt to gain the most amount of yards or a touchdown.
What Constitutes A Completion?
In the NFL, there are a few things that need to happen to make a completion successful:
- The eligible receiver secures the football in their hands or arms before the ball touches the ground; and
- Touches the ground inbounds with two feet or with any part of the body other than hands; and
- Performs a football move such as tucking the ball, extending the ball forward, turning up the field, or spinning away from an opponent.
