What Is The Definition Of The Butt Fumble In Football? What Is The Butt Fumble In Football? Definition & Meaning

1. The butt fumble in football refers to a turnover that occurred in a game between the New York Jets and New England Patriots on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2012.

In the second quarter of the game and the Jets down 14-0, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez lines up behind center with his team set-up in an I-formation, which consisted of a running back (Shonn Greene) and fullback (Lex Hilliard) stacked behind him. The play was designed to immediately hand the ball off to his right to the fullback Hilliard with Green running to the left to serve as a misdirection. However, Sanchez turned to incorrectly to his left instead of his right, therefore causing Hilliard to run right past him. Trying to salvage the play, Sanchez tries to scramble up the middle, only to find himself running into the backside, or butt, of his right guard Brandon Moore. The impact causes Sanchez to fall and fumble the ball, which was then recovered by Patriots safety Steve Gregory, who then ran it back for a touchdown and furthered the lead to 21-0.
