You can take two steps in basketball. This applies when a player stops dribbling or when receiving a pass while running. After taking two steps, a player must come to a complete stop, pass the basketball to another player or attempt a shot. If they continue past two steps, they will receive a traveling violation.
In the case of a gather, when an NBA player takes two or less steps while gaining control of the ball, they are permitted to dribble again.
