A basketball hoop is composed of two parts: the rim and the backboard.
The dimensions of the hoop vary slightly depending on the level of play.
- Junior and high school: the height of the rim is 10 feet, the width of the backboard is 72 inches, and the distance from the floor to the bottom of the rim is 4 feet.
- NCAA: the height of the rim is 10 feet, the width of the backboard is 72 inches, and the distance from the floor to the bottom of the rim is 4 feet.
- NBA, WNBA, FIBA: the height of the rim is 10 feet, the width of the backboard is 72 inches, and the distance from the floor to the bottom of the rim is 5 feet. In summary, a basketball hoop consists of a rim and a backboard.
At every level of play, rims are 18 inches in diameter. Backboards are also consistent at 6 feet wide and 42 inches tall (3.5 feet).
