What Is The Definition Of Loose Ball Foul In Basketball? What Is A Loose Ball Foul In Basketball? Definition & Meaning

1. This is a foul that is called when neither team has possession of the ball. This often occurs when players are attempting to rebound the ball and someone who has been boxed out makes illegal contact when moving towards the basket. Possession after the foul is given to the opposing team of the player who committed the foul.

A loose ball foul does not count towards a player’s personal foul total or towards their team foul total. However, if the team of the player who committed the foul is in the penalty, then the team that was fouled will be granted free throws.

Do You Shoot Free Throws On A Loose Ball Foul?

If a player commits a loose ball foul only, then no, the player who was fouled does not shoot free throws. However, if the player is on a team who is over the limit in fouls, then the player who was fouled will be granted free throws. In the NBA, they will be given two free throw attempts, but in the NCAA they are given a 1-and-1 opportunity, where they are guaranteed one free throw, but will only be given a second attempt if they make the first.

SportsLingo Goes The Extra-Inch With The Meaning Of Loose Ball Foul

Depending on the game situation and the number of fouls a given team has, a team will alter how aggressive they may play when crashing the boards or going after loose balls. With the rule stating that if a team is in the penalty and they commit a loose ball foul, the opposing team will then be granted free throws. This is important to note in close games, as the team who is in the penalty may play more passively in offensive rebounding situations so that they don’t risk committing a foul. However, if they aren’t in the penalty and are only down a few points in the final minute, they may play more physical when trying to regain possession of the ball.
