Yep. A little rain cost Phi Hughes a big payday.
The Minnesota Twins starting pitcher was set to receive a $500,000 bonus if he reached 210 innings pitched for the season. The thing is, the pitcher’s last outing was called due to a rain delay and he was pulled.
So how close did Hughes come to getting his bonus? One out. That’s right. One single out and Hughes is stuck at 209 2/3 innings pitched for the season.
That’s a tough one to swallow, but Hughes seems to be okay with it and has even turned down an opportunity to pitch this weekend so that he can get his bonus.
Hughes, who already had a base salary of $8 million for the year, felt that it wasn’t right for him to pitch in order to just earn the money since his team is out of playoff contention.
In all honesty, I’m a bit shocked that Hughes turned down the chance to earn a half a million dollars. I get that he feels he’d just be greedy to pitch to only a batter, at the least, but $500,000 can go a long ways for others in this world.
Heck, toss a few pitches, get a strikeout, flyout or whatever, and send that money to charity if you don’t want it. I think that would be the more admirable thing to do.
