Boras: Two New Mystery Teams Pursuing Gerrit Cole

Geoff Burke/USA TODAY Sports

The Gerrit Cole sweepstakes just got hotter.

Scott Boras announced on Tuesday that two new mystery teams have entered the hunt for the ace’s services. Cole has already met with the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Anaheim Angels. The Houston Astros are rumored to be one of the mystery teams, as they contemplate a pursuit to retain the right-hander.

The Dodgers and Angels are both strong contenders to get Cole, as he’s from Orange County and played college ball for UCLA. However, the Yankees are reportedly going to offer him an offer that is going to eclipse the record-setting deal that was given to Stephen Strasburg just yesterday. Strasburg signed a seven-year, $245 million deal to stay with Washington.

Cole was arguably the best pitcher in baseball last season, especially after the All-Star break. At just 29 years old, he finished the season at 20-5, with a 2.50 ERA and 326 strikeouts in just 212 1/3 innings.

Cole is expected to sign a contract that exceeds $300 million.
