1. A sand pit is the rectangular landing zone for both the triple jump and the long jump. Officials and track assistants rake the sand pit between each jump.
The sand pit serves two purposes:

How Does The Sand Pit Help Prevent Injury?
Similar to jumping into a pile of leaves versus onto concrete, sand slows the jumper’s momentum gradually. That “give” allows jumpers to propel themselves forward without worrying about a potentially dangerous landing.
