1. Deductions are decreases in a gymnast’s overall score based on faults in their routine. Judges determine which deductions to make in elite competitions by referring to the Code of Points set by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).

What Are Neutral Deductions In Gymnastics?

Score deductions in gymnastics are separated into two categories: execution deductions and neutral deductions. Neutral deductions are scoring penalties applied for errors that don’t apply to the execution, technique, or artistry of a skill.

Examples of errors that would result in a neutral deduction include:

  • Stepping out of bounds
  • Attire violations
  • Time violations
  • Podium violations

Depending on the nature of the error, a neutral deduction can range from 0.1 to 0.5.

What Are Execution Deductions In Gymnastics?

Execution deductions are applied to a gymnast’s score when there is a flaw in the execution, technique, or artistry of a skill. The Execution Score starts at 10 points at the beginning of a routine. From there, deductions ranging from 0.1 to 0.8 are applied as faults in the routine occur.

Examples of errors that can lead to an execution deduction include:

  • Legs separate during a tuck
  • Ankles cross during a twist
  • Loss of balance on a landing
  • Hop after landing a dismount
  • Lack of expressiveness in floor exercise choreography

How Much Of A Deduction Is A Fall In Elite Gymnastics?

If a gymnast falls during an event, the deduction is 0.5 to 1.0 point.

What Happens If You Step Out Of Bounds In Gymnastics?

Stepping out of bounds during an event results in a deduction of 1.0 to 3.0.

1. Aly Raisman took an extra hop after her dismount from the balance beam, so that will give her a small score deduction.
