What Is The Definition Of Skip In Curling?

What Is The Role And Responsibility Of The Skip?

The primary role of the skip is a leader who provides strategic positioning for a team. They call shots to their teammates using a combination of verbal cues and physical signals.

For every stone delivered, the skip is the teammate to call the lines and communicates with sweepers as it moves down the sheet. The skip’s job is to determine where the stone will travel and make calls to sweepers to maintain its path.

The other primary duty of the skip is to play the fourth stones, which is very tough given that the last stones are the most pivotal. The skip must have a good shot selection to put the stones where they need to be.

Throughout a game, the skip can leverage a multitude of tactics, including:

  • Select optimal shots and tactics based on the timing of rocks.
  • Select optimal shots and tactics based on the characteristics of the curling sheet.
  • Understand and read the ice to call the best possible game.
  • Take in their knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of teammates and apply that strategy to give the opponent less of an advantage.
  • Make calls based on understanding the abilities of their teammates.
