Dallas Cowboys Hire Mike McCarthy As New Head Coach

Dallas Cowboys Hire Mike McCarthy As New Head Coach

Jake Roth/USA TODAY Sports

The Mike McCarthy era in Dallas has started.

After weeks of speculation, the Dallas Cowboys officially moved on from former head coach Jason Garrett and just hours later, welcomed McCarthy to the family.

Scoopage alert: the @dallascowboys have agreed to terms with Mike McCarthy to be their new head coach. Announcement and press conference expected later this week @NFLonFOX #cowboys

McCarthy served as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 2006-2018,  while teaming up with both Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. During his 13 seasons with the Packers, he compiled a 125-77-2 record and won Super Bowl XLV with Rodgers. However, their relationship became sour during the 2018 season, and McCarthy was let go at Week 13.

After another disappointing season, the Cowboys were expecting to make drastic changes to their team, most notably at head coach. Garrett, who had been their leader since 2010 when he became their interim head coach, failed to lead the team into the postseason and finished at 8-8. Many speculated it was going to be announced he would not be resigned as head coach, but owner Jerry Jones was mum on the issue. Fans and media alike were left perplexed at what was transpiring, as no announcement was made as to whether or not he was being considered to return. However, the inevitable happened, and the Cowboys let it known on Sunday that Garrett would not be returning to the team in any capacity. Garrett’s overall record was 86-67, with just two playoff wins.

The terms of McCarthy’s contract has yet to be revealed and a formal announcement of his hiring is expected to happen sometime this week.
