Tony Romo is one of the most successful quarterbacks in Dallas Cowboys history. He played for the Cowboys from 2003 to 2016 and made several memorable playoff appearances during his career. Romo won two of his six playoff games (2-4) in a stretch between 2006 and 2014, compiling 1,316 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and two interceptions.
2006 Playoffs
Romo’s first playoff appearance came in 2006 when the Cowboys lost to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Wild Card round. Romo threw for 244 yards and two touchdowns but was intercepted twice, and the Cowboys lost 21–20. The fateful play was when Dallas attempted a 19-yard field goal with 1:19 left in the fourth quarter. Romo, the holder, fumbled the snap and made a wild attempt to run the ball but was tackled just shy of the line to gain, turning the ball over to Seattle, who won the game.
2007 Playoffs
In 2007, Romo led the Cowboys to the playoffs for a second consecutive season. He was riding high, signing a $67.5 million contract extension and carrying the team to a 13-3 regular season record and an NFC East Division title. He wrapped up the 2007 season with 4,211 passing yards with 36 touchdowns and 19 interceptions and a second straight Pro Bowl nod. In their divisional playoff game against the New York Giants, Romo could not engineer a late comeback victory, tossing a costly interception to Giants corner R.W. McQuarters, sealing their fate. The Giants would end up winning Super Bowl XLII.
2009 Playoffs
Romo carried another successful campaign into the 2009 playoffs, helping the team to their second division title in Romo’s three seasons as starting quarterback. Romo faced the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card round, lifting the team to a victory on his 104.9 passer rating, 34-14. This game was the first playoff win in 13 seasons for Dallas and Romo’s first postseason victory.
The following week, Romo was not so lucky. In the Divisional Round, they faced second-seed Minnesota Vikings, and Romo’s three fumbles and an interception led them to a 34-3 shellacking and a bounce from the playoffs.
2014 Playoffs
After almost a five-year absence from the postseason, Romo helped deliver in the regular season with an early six-game winning streak and an eventual NFC East crown. He was also tied for third in MVP voting, fueled by his leading the NFL in both completion percentage and passer rating.
In the Wild Card round, the renewed Cowboys faced a sneaky Detroit Lions club, needing a comeback after being down at the half, 17-7. Eventually, Romo led the comeback, and Dallas won 24-20 with his 293 yards passing, two TDs, and no interceptions.
In the Divisional Round, the Cowboys ran into the Green Bay Packers, highlighted by one of the most controversial rulings in NFL postseason history. Romo passed downfield to Cowboys wideout Dez Bryant, who pulled in the ball with both feet in bounds. However, the replay showed Bryant bobbled the ball, and he attempted to reach into the end zone. The ruling was that he was down at the 1-yard line, but it was overturned as an incomplete pass after the Packers challenged the call. Dallas lost the game, 26-21.
