trap block
What Is The Definition Of Trap Block In Football?
1. A trap block is a run blocking assignment where a player on the offensive line, usually a guard or tackle, will move from the opposite side of the ball to pick-up an unblocked defender.
With blockers usually blocking “down” or in front of themselves, this technique is different as the blocker must move to their side to pick up a player who was deliberately unblocked. In order for this to work properly, each of the other blockers must pick up their assigned defender and let the remaining free defender to think they have a clear shot at the ballcarrier. The other blockers are usually assigned to defenders are away from the line of scrimmage, such as the linebackers. If timed correctly, the trap blocker will pick-up the unblocked defender, allowing the ballcarrier to run past them and for a positive gain.
