What Is The Definition Of Tumbling In Gymnastics?

What Is Tumbling In Gymnastics? Definition & Meaning On SportsLingo1. Tumbling is the acrobatics part of gymnastics, including the flips, handstands, handsprings and twists that a gymnast does. It does not include the jumps, leaps and turns performed during an event.

Typically, tumbling refers to any of the acrobatic elements performed on beam or floor.

What Is The Difference Between Tumbling And Gymnastics?

Tumbling is just one aspect of gymnastics. A gymnastics routine requires multiple different types of movements to be included for competition, and tumbling is just one of those required movements.

What Tumbling Skills Must An Elite Gymnast’s Floor Routine Include?

Each elite gymnast must include the following tumbling skills in their floor routine:

  • A flip with at least a 360-degree twist
  • A double back flip
  • Backward and forward tumbling

What Is The Difference Between Backward And Forward Tumbling?

In backward tumbling, your backside is facing the direction of travel as rotation begins. Backward tumbling usually is initiated with a roundoff into a back handspring leading into the more difficult skills.

In forward tumbling, the front of your body is facing the direction of travel as rotation begins. Front tumbling usually starts with a front handspring to gain momentum for more difficult skills.

How Are Tumbling Skills Ranked In Difficulty In Gymnastics?

Tumbling skills are ranked by being assigned a letter A-J, with J being the most difficult skill. A skill is ranked with a higher difficulty level if there are more flips or twists involved and if the gymnast’s body is in a more straightened position (either pike or layout). Compared to a tuck, these body positions as make it harder to get the same rotational velocity and are therefore rewarded with a higher letter.

Example Of How Tumbling Is Used In Commentary

1. As one of her tumbling passes on floor in Tokyo, Jade Carey performed a front layout stepout to a double twisting double back.
